The Holy Spirit described in John 14-16

Written on July 30th, 2021

This post was originally a set of notes written after my daily bible reading. It will only include details written from the book of John, even though there is much more information and detail about the Holy Spirit in other parts of the Bible.

John is a book writen by someone close to Jesus. The book of John is about Jesus' coming to earth, and why we should trust in him. The last verse in the book of John shows that the events described are written "so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah... and by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name". With this being said, the intimate details inside of the book provide a great description of the Holy Spirit.

Most people know the Holy Spirit as part of the Holy Trinity. But who is the Holy Spirit exactly? The Holy Spirit is revealed as an amazing gift to believers, as the reward to the pain felt by Jesus returning to the Father (John 16:22). The Holy Spirit is an incredible gift of wisdom, companionship, love, glory, and communication to the Father. Some translations even refer to him as a "helper".

When was the Holy Spirit given to us? He is given to us after Jesus leaves our world, as the means to continue communication with the Father when Jesus leaves. There is no coincidence with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, as he was gifted to us after Jesus leaves our world. Referring back to John 16:22, the Holy Spirit relieves the pain of Jesus leaving this world and is first a comforter for the disciples. The Holy Spirit continues to comfort us to this day!

The Holy Spirit is an incredible gift to us, and we must cherish his prescence as the disciples did with Jesus. We should acknowledge our blessing in having God guide us and be with us! It was something that wasn't promised in the Old Testament. Even though God revealed himself to our brothers written in the Old Testament, we are much more blessed to have the Holy Spirit with us at all times. Jesus says he gives life and many wonderful things to us (John 20:31, 14:27, 16:13, 10:10), and the Holy Spirit is definetly one of the greatest gifts Jesus has given to us. I thank God for his unending mercy and grace, and for the oppurtunity to have a close relationship with him while we go through the motions of life.
